Seeta's Trial by Fire
Lakshman obeyed Ram's orders and, in the presence of all the demons and monkeys, crowned Vibheeshan king of Lanka.
"Seek King Vibheeshan's permission and proceed to the Ashok Garden," Ram instructed Hanuman. "Inform Seeta that Ravan has been slain; she has been anxiously awaiting this news. Also, tell her to bathe, dress, and come to meet Lakshman and me."
Hanuman swiftly made his way to the Ashok Garden and delivered Ram's message to Seeta. Overjoyed, she bathed in pure water, adorned herself in new clothes and gold ornaments, and was carried by four demonesses to Ram and Lakshman on a palanquin. Seeing her husband for the first time since her abduction, Seeta was euphoric. Ram, equally thrilled to see Seeta after so long, maintained his composure.
"I am glad to have you back," Ram said to Seeta. "But I cannot accept you until your purity is proven to the world. You must undergo a fire test."
Tears filled Seeta's eyes, and Lakshman was troubled by Ram's apparent reluctance to welcome her back. Nevertheless, he built a bonfire as his elder brother had ordered. Seeta folded her hands and bowed to her husband.
"Oh, Fire god," Seeta implored. "Protect me if I have remained loyal and faithful to my husband." As she entered the flames, a miracle occurred—all the gods, including the Fire god, appeared.
"Oh, Lord," Brahma, the Creator of the universe, addressed Ram. "You are an avatar of Vishnu, incarnated to defeat Ravan. Seeta is none other than your wife, Goddess Lakshmi."
