The Slippers of Duty
"We have come here for your coronation," said Bharat to Ram. "In our dear father's absence, the people of Ayodhya are helpless and without a leader. They need a just king. Only you can remove the darkness that has enveloped Ayodhya. Brother, do us a favor and return to Ayodhya with us."
"Dear Bharat, obeying Father's command is my supreme duty," Ram told Bharat. "I can never violate it. If I don't follow his order, even the splendor of all three worlds will not give me happiness. Lakshman is by my side, so I fear nothing." Ram was firm as a rock about his decision, which upset Bharat.
"Since Father is no more, you are now my father," said Bharat to Ram. "Your wish is my command. I will consider it my duty and obey it. But please give me your slippers; I will consider them your representative and rule Ayodhya in your name until you return." Ram gave his slippers to Bharat, who respectfully took them to Ayodhya and placed them by the throne.
