The Demon's Plot: Hidimb and Hidimba Target the Sleeping Pandavas

While the Pandavas were in deep slumber in the forest, the demon Hidimb smelled human flesh. He told his sister Hidimba to investigate and kill the humans.

Hidimba's Dilemma: Love Defies Duty

The demoness Hidimba headed toward the smell and found the Pandavas sleeping. But when she saw Bheem, she was attracted to him and decided not to obey her brother's instructions. 

Instead, she transformed into a pretty woman and respectfully asked Bheem, "Who are you? And who are these people sleeping here?" 

She went on, "My brother is a demon and the owner of this forest. He sent me to kill all of you. Please accept me; I will transport you to a safe location."

Confrontation in the Forest: Bheem, Hidimba, and the Enraged Hidimb

But Bheem did not fear the demon Hidimb and did not want to wake his mother and brothers. A little later, a frightening-looking demon appeared from behind the bushes. Hidimba, the demon's sister, stood transfixed. When Hidimb saw his sister in the form of a young woman talking to Bheem, he started roaring. 

"What, in this weak human, caused you to disobey my orders?" Hidimb asked his sister, gnashing his teeth. "I will kill him now, and then I will kill you!"

Bheem's Challenge: Protecting Family and Honor

Bheem calmly asked Hidimb, "Why disturb my brothers and mother, who are asleep? Let us go a little far away; then you can fight me. As far as your sister is concerned, it isn't right to kill a woman. In any case, your fight is against me."

Bheem started going away from his sleeping family, and that's when the demon attacked him!

Kunti's Awakening: Revelations of Love and Battle

The battle between the big Pandava and the mighty demon began. The noise awoke Kunti, who saw a beautiful young woman standing before her. 

"Who are you?" Kunti asked in surprise.

"I am that demon Hidimb's sister," replied Hidimba. "My brother sent me here to kill you, but I changed my mind when I saw your son. I wanted to take you to a safe place, but your son didn't want to wake any of you up. Right now, he is fighting with my brother Hidimb."

Brothers in Arms: Arjun's Call to Action

The conversation between Kunti and Hidimba woke all of Bheem's brothers up. 

"I have woken up, Bheem," yelled Arjun. 

"Sit back and watch the spectacle," replied Bheem.

Arjun wondered, "Why is Bheem playing with that demon? Doesn't he know that a demon's power doubles at night?" 

He shouted, "Bheem, you have played enough. Now finish him off."

Bheem's Decisive Victory

Upon hearing Arjun's plea, Bheem picked the demon Hidimb up, rotated him a few times, and flung him to the ground. Hidimb died on the spot.

Love After Battle: The Birth of Ghatothkach

After Hidimb's death, Hidimba and Bheem fell in love and had a child together—a son they named Ghatothkach.
